Undergarments have had more emphasis on the visual appeal since the late 1800s. Corsets were removed with associated freedom of movement. The undergarments had added decorations and began to be seen in colors. Heavy fabric choices were replaced over time by fabrics of satin and silk. Man made fabrics such as Lycra and nylon replaced plain linen and cotton.
The purpose of undergarments during the early part of the twentieth century was threefold. Undergarments reshaped the figure. They were helpful in improving hygiene. Undergarments also provided for modesty. The invention of crinolines made possible the disappearance of large and bulky underclothes.
As the 20th century progressed the design of underwear became smaller and more formfitting. It was during the 60s that glamorization began. Major design companies started to add sex appeal to the garments and used Hollywood celebrities to further popularize the industry.
Today, some girls and women will be seen wearing undergarments as outerwear. The bras are decorated with lace and made of fashion fabrics, but they are still undergarments with decorative touches. Fashion continues to evolve in the design of clothing, including undergarments.
Since the mid 1990s there has been a push to wear the correct size of bra instead of a general bra size. A United Kingdom media campaign urges every women have a proper bra fitting with each and every bra purchase. Many stores now have sales personnel who specialize in the proper fitting of a bra. Fun designs, good fit and comfortable fabrics make lingerie a continuing fashion statement.
